BSF figures the face-to-face dimension and shaft engagement by giving full motor shaft engagement inside the coupling and as much pump shaft engagement as possible while leaving clearance between the edge of the coupling hub and the pump pilot face (or the inside of our adaptor flange, whichever the case may be). In cases where full shaft engagement cannot be achieved inside the coupling due to the length of the shaft, BSF follows the "rule of thumb" one times the shaft diameter for shaft engagement (if possible). We then check to see if the coupling set screw reaches the shaft if that information is available to us, depending on the coupling manufacturer.
As a general rule, BSF designs adaptors being used with Magnaloy couplings with a shaft gap large enough to enable the removal of the coupling spider, if needed, without having to take the pump or motor away from the adaptor. The "X" dimension shown in Magnaloy literature (max. shaft gap) is shown for illustrative purposes only and is not necessary for satisfactory performance of the coupling.
